Fibromyalgia and Leaky gut Syndrome
There has been always a strong relationship between fibromyalgia, IBS and leaky gut syndrome. Leaky gut syndrome is the major factor that contributes to leaky gut syndrome. Intestinal Mucosa is the what the lining of the intestinal tract is called as. This mucosa is responsible for allowing essential nutrients to be absorbed by the body. This also acts as a barrier from harmful substances and toxins from entering the body. In the individuals with leaky gut syndrome the there is increased permeability of the mucosa due to damaged caused in desmosomes. This is the one which holds the mucosal cells together. This allows large sized food particles to enter the body circulation. This can cause many symptoms which is present in fibromyalgia.
The symptoms found in individual who have intestinal permeability includes Fatigue and malaise; Arthralgias; Myalgias; Fevers of unknown origin; Food intolerances; Abdominal pain; Abdominal distension; Diarrhea; Skin rashes; Toxic feelings; Cognitive and memory deficits ; Shortness of breath; Poor exercise tolerance. Many of the leaky gut symptoms are similar to fibromyalgia. The occurrence of the symptoms can be due to two main two processes which occur second to the increases mucosal permeability. The first condition is the immune system response.
The system recognizes the larger particles to the invaders and starts attacking them by producing antibodies. Since some of the large particles have the same appearance as the tissues the immune system can self attack those tissues, which causes auto-immune reaction and condition. The increased intestinal permeability affects the body by causing stress on the liver.
